What are some examples in the lecture of the influence of culture on behavior and communication between teachers and students in the classroom? Compare the examples with your own classroom experiences.

Different cultures can make the teaching and learning different. In my opinion, the way to communicate, the educational style, and the way to think are three main reasons that may have effect on the educational system.

First, there are different ways to communicate and interact with others in different cultures. In America and Europe, majority of teachers and professors may use a lot of group discussion for the purpose of sharing and finding the answer of questions. This type of the teaching strategy may develop students’ self-learning ability. However, In Asia countries, students are required to be quiet in the class while teachers are always talking and lecturing. Students in this kind of learning environment may become passive to learn because they just wait for teachers to solve the problem.

Second, the examination style may also influence the way to communicate between teachers and students in the classroom. In America and Europe, students are encouraged to learn based on their interest and they are welcomed to have different opinion. Teachers and parents focus on the learning process instead of the exam result. On contrast, in order to get into top schools, students in Asian are not allowed to develop their interests. They need to focus on the standard exam for getting into good high schools as well as top universities. Therefore, teachers and parents only pay attention on the exam score instead of learning process and their achievement. In this case, the purpose of study is for the exam itself.

Third, thinking style may also affect the communication between teachers and students. In Western culture, teachers encourage students to develop their critical thinking. Therefore, teachers always throw in questions or case study in the class and students will need to solve the problem by themselves. This is so called students-centered classroom. Teachers’ role is to give guidance while students play a main role in their learning process. The relationship between teachers and students are just like friends. However, students in Asian are afraid of their teachers since teachers have authority to affect their score in their final grade. They always follow teachers’ instruction and are afraid to challenge teachers.

As a student in Asian, I really hope one day I can develop and focus on my interests instead of focusing on the exam. I think I will grab any chances to be an exchange student in western country so I can experience the different classroom atmosphere.
