Project Objective


Through the reform of curriculum, teaching materials, and teaching methods/pedagogy, the faculty members at National Chengchi University’s Foreign Language Center expect to achieve the following objectives in the English-for-General Purposes College English I and II courses:

  • To enrich English courses with a cross-cultural dimension and humanistic concerns
  • To enhance students' ability in cross-cultural communication
  • To improve pedagogy with innovation and apply multiple assessment methods
  • To enhance professional knowledge and ability by building up a teacher community
  • To develop online English courses


1. To enrich English courses with a cross-cultural dimension and humanistic concerns


  • 15 full-time teachers and 3 part-time teachers
  • 54 College English (I) sections
  • Incorporation of multi-cultural issues
  • Each teacher designs his/her cultural project lesson plan

2. To enhance students' ability in cross-cultural communication


  • Diverse teaching/learning activities
  • Students improve listening and reading skills using authentic materials
  • Listening/reading input connected to learner speaking/writing products

3. To improve pedagogy with innovation and apply multiple assessment methods


  • Eighteen unique lesson plans showcasing innovative pedagogy
  • Multiple assessment methods, including traditional examinations and performance assessments
  • Assessment criteria addressing content and organization, pronunciation and fluency, lexis and grammar, plus innovation and teamwork
  • Students learn to observe different perspectives through peer evaluation


4. To enhance professional knowledge and ability by building up a teacher community


  • Under the same objectives, teachers design teaching plans based on individual specialties
  • Teachers inspire each other and improve teaching effectiveness through constant communication
  • Teacher community and sharing sessions provide reflection opportunities
  • Lectures on College English Curriculum Plan and Reform , Online Course Experience, and Integrating Cultural Projects into the Freshman English Curriculum

5. To develop online English courses


  • An Online Course Development Committee delegated to create online culture course units
  • Course materials developed, practices and activities designed
  • Three units to be completed at the end of 104 school year: Hofstede’s Cultural Dimensions, Stereotype, Education
  • Online course integrated into face-to-face courses starting 105 school year
